Redmond Clay: Facial Mud and EarthPaste (and the WINNER is….!)

Redmond Trading

My friends over at Redmond Trading sent some goodies my way. I’ve used Redmond’s Real Salt for quite some time, and you probably notice that I always reference it in my recipes. I’ve even been known to carry a little shaker in my purse with me at all times. I’ll do another post another day specifically on salt. Today we’re going to talk about a couple of their clay products. I’m going to tell you all about my experience with the Redmond Facial Mud (clay mask), and their toothpaste.

Redmond Clay is pure and natural Bentonite clay. Redmond’s Bentonite clay is made up of negatively charged molecules, and most toxins are positively charged molecules. Using clay for detoxification (internally and externally) can be quite beneficial. I spoke about the detoxification properties of clay in my Zeolite Detoxifying Toothpaste video. Zeolite and Bentonite clay are both detoxifying clays.

On Friday my cousin and our friend decided to get a little Facial Mud crazy. The nice thing here is that my cousin is an amazing beautician. She mainly does hair now, but she used to facials on a regular basis. We totally utilized her skills.

We started out by hanging out in a room full of screaming children. For a more relaxing spa-like feeling, we all would suggest finding a quiet place instead, HA! BUT, if you’re busy, and there are always screaming children around, it’s better to do it than to not do it at all. Right? RIGHT?! Yeah, that’s what we think anyway. We put headbands in our hair, got a facial paint brush and the clay, and got down to business.

Let me start by pointing out that you don’t have to paint the Facial Mud on your face, and you definitely don’t have to have a Beautician do it (like we did). You can just slather it on with your finger tips, but the paint brush does help it feel more like a nice relaxing spa moment. The goal here is to make sure a nice even layer is covering the entire face and partial neck (whole neck if you prefer) leaving the eye area and lips free of clay.

Here is what I looked like as soon as she finished putting the Facial Mud on my face:

Once the Facial Mud is applied, let it sit anywhere from 10minutes-30minutes. If you have very sensitive skin, or you’ve never done a clay mask before, I recommend trying 10 minutes out first just to be safe. If you have tough skin, or if you’ve done clay masks before (and know what to expect), you’ll want to leave it on until it is mostly dry, but still a little moist.

Here’s the three of us after our masks had set nicely:

Here is where I’ll warn you about a few things:

As I mentioned earlier, Bentonite Clay is EXTREMELY detoxifying. This is a good thing, don’t be alarmed. However, I find it only fair to warn you that it can cause redness and sometimes irritation. It’s also drawing all of the junk out of your skin! The more toxic it is, the worse it will be. Don’t be scared, though. This is a really good thing for you! Your skin will most likely be really red and hot to the touch after you wash the mask off. This is definitely a great time to point out that you probably don’t want to be doing this mask if you have somewhere nice to go shortly after. I’d for sure recommend doing this type of cleansing skin care a good day or two before you have a nice outing planned.

After the facial Mud is mostly dry, thoroughly wash it off with a nice soft wash cloth.

We slathered our skin in extra-virgin coconut oil as a moisturizer after we thoroughly washed off the Facial Mud. I don’t recommend using any form of scented lotion or moisturizer at all. Your skin is going to be extremely sensitive after this facial. You are going to want to coat it in something soothing and nourishing. This is why we chose to use extra-virgin coconut oil. We started to use a good moisturizer that contained a lot of essential oils, but it was too much for our fresh, raw skin to handle. The coconut oil soothed our faces and helped add back in the good moisture and good antioxidants.

You can make this Facial Mud mask by purchasing dry powder Bentonite Clay from Redmond Trading and making it yourself, or you can use this tube of pre-hydrated clay. I recommend using the tube at least once so that you can get an idea of what type of consistency you should be looking for when mixing your own.

A little about Redmond Trading’s EarthPaste

As you may remember, I did an instructional video on how to make your own Zeolite Detoxifying Toothpaste. I still use my Zeolite toothpaste on a daily basis, and I love it! I have actually come to LIKE brushing my teeth with mud! Who ever thought THAT would happen? If you haven’t tried this process, pleased don’t run screaming at the thought of brushing your teeth with mud. It’s not just any ol’ mud, it’s clean mud. HA! Watch the video, and you’ll understand.

EarthPaste is a form of clay toothpaste that’s already made for you. It’s convenient. They also know how to get the right consistency and flavor (using Essential Oils and Xylitol)  every time. I also love that they sell it in tubes or in travel/sample pouches! I can get a good 3 or so uses out of each sample pouch (I just stick it in a zip-top baggie), or if you are traveling with other people, each pouch could put some paste on 2-4 toothbrushes for a more single use factor.

photo 4The EarthPaste toothpaste is available in Peppermint, Wintergreen, Cinnamon, and LemonTwist (a good option for your kiddos!). All of them are chemical-free, and are safe to eat! They have the similar detoxifying effects that the Zeolite Detoxifying Toothpaste will have, but it’s pre-made for you. You won’t have to worry about mixing it the right way or having specific Essential Oils on hand. Again, it’s also a great option for traveling. I like to use my homemade Zeolite toothpaste at home, and use this convenient EarthPaste for my purse or traveling.

I’m feeling a little bit generous today…

We are holding a GIVEAWAY! One lucky reader will win TWO sample pouches of Wintergreen Earthpaste, ONE Cinnamon sample pouch of Earthpaste, and ONE sample pouch of Redmond Clay ( the clay can be used to make your own toothpaste, make your own Facial Mud, as an internal cleanser, among MANY other things!)
